About

What Cenaculum is

A retreat built around prayer, the liturgy, and life together in Latin.

Prayer and liturgy

Mass, the divine office, and common prayer shape the day. Cenaculum is meant to make room for worship without turning the retreat into a rush.

Latin all day

Latin is the ordinary language of Cenaculum. We ask participants to use it throughout the retreat except in emergencies or matters of real necessity.

Shared rhythm

Meals, talks, games, walks, and quiet time are all part of the retreat. The structure is steady, but the atmosphere is relaxed.

FAQ

Common questions

Is it fully in Latin?

Yes, the entire event is conducted entirely in Latin: talks, liturgy, meals, social conversations, etc. We ask participants to only speak Latin throughout the Cenaculum except in emergencies or matters of real necessity. Sometimes, of course, there is a good reason to use a word or two in another language. For instance, sometimes a talk will mention a Greek or Hebrew word. Or sometimes you won't know the Latin word for something, so you can judiciously ask "quomodo dicitur 'salad?'"

What does a day at Cenaculum look like?

A typical day includes Prime, Mass, breakfast, two conference talks, breaks, Rosary, Confessions, and the Angelus, lunch, midday rest, games, a brief talk, common reading, Vespers, dinner, a walk, evening recreation, and Compline.

What should I pack?

In addition to the clothes, hygiene items, medications, and other personal necessities for a week-long stay, you will likely want to bring a rosary, a notebook, a pen, a Latin dictionary, and perhaps a Latin book you would enjoy reading during quiet breaks. In addition, we customarily put on a low-key talent show on the final evening, so consider any props or musical instrument you might need for your talent.

What if I have dietary restrictions or food allergies?

For special dietary needs, you will have a chance to indicate the details on the registration form. You can also reach out to Abbe Jeffrey at retreatcenter@icksp.org with more detailed questions regarding food.
